Late Summer and Fall  

 Education T and L 727.28: “How To Teach About the Mounds”

Dr. Richard Shiels (History) with Dr. Bradley Lepper (Archaeology) and Dr. Christine Warner (Education) 5 credit hours.

 This class will meet first for one week in August. Students will then attend academic conferences featuring art educators, archaeologists, Native Americans and teachers of American Indian Studies on three Saturdays: September 24, October 22 and November 19.  Students will develop lesson plans and will have opportunities to involve their own students.

 Winter Quarter

Education T and L 727.98    “Developing K-12 Educational Materials for and about the Ohio’s Ancient Mounds and Cultures.”  5 credits

Dr. Christine D. Warner with Dr. Richard Shiels and Dr.Binaya Subedi (Education).

This class will develop curricular materials from oral histories of Native Americans who live in Ohio or have Ohio roots that will be collected during winter, spring and summer of 2005.  These curricular materials will fulfill the State of Oho Social Studies education standards for grades 1-12 and will prepare students for state proficiency tests.

Spring Quarter

Education  T and L 925.25 “Native American Children’s Literature.”

Dr. Christine Warner.   3 credits

 This class will survey literature by Native parents, educators, poets, writers, shamans and teachers of American Indian children. Readings will include essays,  poems and critical reviews as well as stories and narrative histories.

The course number is likely to be changed
